SEAMARTIN – Melbourne, Australia

Designed and built by Cliff Martin, the Seamartin Spinning reel is considered by collectors Australia's signature spinning reel.  Martin applied for the patent for his large, unusual, wood body spinning reel in 1959 and it was granted in 1962.  The reel is made of Cedar and is sealed to protect the inner workings including its bronze gears.  Seamartin reels are quite large and were built for surf fishing for sharks and and also for salmon fishing.  Martin produced a limited quantity of cedar reels from 1964 to 1970 and then sold the company to Oakland Agencies who redesigned the reels and made them from modern materials.
