Montague began manufacturing and affordable line of split bamboo and wood fishing rods in 1881. In the mid-1920s Montague purchased an existing reel making company and started producing reels.
Montague reels are seldom found marked Montague, instead, they made many different reels for several retailers which were marked solely with the retailer's name or just a model name. Montague sold to Ocean City Reel Company in 1934, having produced a prodigious amount of reels.
Some of Montague's finer reels are the "Imperial" and "Manitou" trolling reels as well as reels marked with the "Kosmic" brand. Fly reels marked "Kosmic" are quite collectible.
